Subject: Vibrato
Question: Branford, I am really working on getting that nice vibrato sound on the sax(soprano) and I am having a frustrating time. I am using the jaw motion to do it but sometimes it doesn't sound quite right or the note gets stuttered, if that makes sense. Can you or any other players tell me your method or how to practice at it. I'm sure it will come in time but I want to make sure I do it right.
Branford's Answer: Alvin Batiste taught me a good way. Play low "g" for 4 beats, quarter note equals 60. The next bar lip down to F# for 4 beats. Do this 4 times. Then switch to half notes for 4 bars, then quarter note, etc. By the time you get to 32nd notes, you have a vibrato that is as wide as any ever played in any music. At that point you can shorten it to whatever suits you.
